what's the running costs like?
|
Err, hideous. Well, could be worse (the Renault Clio we had would have given it a close run for its money in running costs were it not for the warrenty).
To be honest it has got cheaper. Maserati spares prices used to be frightening but when Ferrari took over the prices dropped (think they were embarressed that Ferrari spares prices were cheaper ). Distributor cap was over £250 for example (and another £95 for the rotor arm), cam belt was £70. Sump plate is £95.
Prices have definatly dropped (we got some new wings about a year ago, and they were within reason for cost), and if you are careful you can source parts from elsewhere. For example the 222SE front fog lights are from the late Lancia Thema, and when we needed some they were £105 from Maserati and £38 from the local Fiat dealer. Similarly the front side light / indicator units are Fiat 127 items. The fuel pump was over £200 from Maserati but under £100 from the local Weber dealer.
You would need to find a reasonable Maserati mechanic who understands the concept of being able to afford things. There are some very good mechanics who don't (eg, that £95 sump plate is sometimes treated as a service item and replaced at 6000 miles as they get chipped from grounding out).
A 1980s QP3 would not be cheap to run. The engine in that is an old school Maserati V8. There are very few in the UK, and they are all lhd. I do get tempted with a QP4 though (preferably a V8 manual, rather than the V6).
All the best

Alfa are getting to be a pain with spares. Quite a few bits for the 4wd 33 are no longer available, even really simple things like the bolts to hold the rear calipers on.

Back wheel came off with hub attached due to a rotten rear beam axle, scrapped it after that. It was a 1979 'T' reg and was only 10 yrs old when i had it, ITALIAN cars and puddles eh, not a good match in the 70's/80's.

Ouch. Explains why good Sud axles are hard to find these days. Friend has several Suds and loads of spare parts.
The Suds rusted pretty badly. 33s were not too bad (certainly not as bad as Fords standards).
P4 is good fun, with a revvy engine and fairly light for a 4wd car. Rattles a bit (less than the 155) but can't say that bothers me, and it is pretty harsh but that is only an issue on the motorway.
All the best

If you have a manual gearbox please read on.
Before putting your car into reverse, depress the clutch and select 1st gear, keeping the clutch down pull it out of 1st and straight into reverse, this will eliminate the crunching / grinding noises sometimes heard when selecting reverse directly.
This method is PROVED to work, makes reverse selection easier on older vehicles and sounds kinder to the gearbox.
Johnny's tip of the day. |
LOL, mine goes zzzzzzzz grrrrrrrrr BANG, the whole car jerks as i go into reverse sometimes |
